Your Lasting Power of Attorney questions
We know this can feel complicated. We've answered the questions people ask us most, in plain English, to help you get started with confidence.
£49 per LPA with us, plus the OPG's £92 registration fee for each, against £500+ per LPA at a solicitor. You only pay when it's ready. If you earn under £12,000 or get certain benefits, the OPG fee may be reduced or waived.
You can, and the £92 fee is the same either way: you pay it to the OPG yourself, not to us. Our £49 adds a person who reads your LPA after you pay, plain-English help on every question, step-by-step signing instructions, free edits until you register, and free post if you'd rather not print. Yes, and you don't need a solicitor. Our guided form is in plain English and most people finish in about 7 minutes. Your LPA is just as valid as one a solicitor drew up, as long as it's signed, witnessed and registered with the OPG.
Print it, or we'll post it to you, then sign in order: you, your certificate provider, then your attorneys. Send it to the OPG with the £92 fee. Registration takes 8 to 10 weeks if there are no mistakes, and your attorneys can only use it once it's registered.
The OPG explains what needs fixing, and many mistakes can be corrected within 3 months for a reduced £46 OPG fee. Most returns come down to signing, which your instructions cover, and editing and downloading again is always free.
You can fill it in with them or for them, but it must be their decision, and they sign it themselves while they still have mental capacity. If they've already lost capacity, the family would need to apply to the Court of Protection instead.
