GOV.UK, an online service or a solicitor?
There are three ways to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in England and Wales. Whichever you choose, the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) charges the same £92 registration fee for each LPA. What changes is how much help you get, who checks it, and what you pay for that help.

What SimpleLPA is, plainly
SimpleLPA Ltd is a legal technology provider and document preparation service. We’re not a law firm and we don’t give legal advice, so we can’t tell you which route is right for you.
Here’s what we do. We guide you through each question in plain English and fill in the official OPG form. A member of our team reads every LPA after you pay, usually within 48 hours. You get step-by-step signing instructions, and free edits and re-downloads before you register.
It’s free to start, and you pay £49 per LPA only when it’s ready. Once it’s signed, you send it to the OPG yourself with the £92 fee, which you pay to the OPG, not to us. See how it works.
What every route has in common
However you make it, an LPA can’t be used until it’s signed correctly and registered with the OPG.
- 1Everyone signs the same original paper document.
- 2You sign first, then your certificate provider, then your attorneys.
- 3You send it to the OPG with the £92 fee for each LPA, or apply for a reduction or exemption.
- 4Registration takes 8 to 10 weeks if there are no mistakes.
- 5If the OPG sends it back, it explains what needs fixing. The OPG may let you correct it and apply again within 3 months for £46. Why LPAs get rejected.
Questions people ask
Is GOV.UK cheaper than SimpleLPA?
Yes. GOV.UK lists only the £92 registration fee, so it's the lowest-cost route. With SimpleLPA you pay £49 per LPA on top, for plain-English help, a person reading your LPA and step-by-step signing instructions.
Do I need a solicitor to make an LPA?
No. You can make an LPA yourself on GOV.UK or with an online service. If you need legal advice about your choices, see a solicitor.
What does SimpleLPA check?
A member of our team reads your LPA after you pay, usually within 48 hours, so anything wrong can be fixed before you sign. We don't give legal advice.
Does SimpleLPA send my LPA to the OPG?
No. You sign it and send it to the OPG with the £92 fee, which you pay to the OPG, not to us. Our instructions explain how, step by step.
What if the OPG sends my LPA back?
The OPG explains what needs fixing, and may let you correct it and apply again within 3 months for £46. Edits and re-downloads with SimpleLPA are free.
Can I make an LPA for my mum or dad?
You can fill it in with them or for them, but the decisions must be theirs, and they must sign it while they have mental capacity. If they've already lost capacity, the family would need to apply to the Court of Protection instead.
